Argentina Duck Species Guide
Our prime wetlands near the Paraná River Delta host an incredible diversity of waterfowl. Here are some of the key species you will encounter during your duck hunting trip at AWS Lodge:
Rosy-billed Pochard
Pato picazo (Netta peposaca)
The Rosy-billed Pochard, often just called "Picazo," is arguably the king of Argentine waterfowl. Males boast a striking red bill. Similar in body mass and hardiness to a US Mallard, their powerful, diving flight pattern through private lagoons is a thrilling challenge.
White-faced Whistling-Duck
Sirirí pampa (Dendrocygna viduata)
Also known as the White-faced Whistling-Duck, this elegant bird is famous for its distinctive face pattern and piercing call. Their large size, approaching that of a US Mallard, combined with their fast, agile flight, makes them a highly sought-after trophy.
Yellow-billed Pintail
Pato maicero (Anas georgica)
One of the most common and classic Argentina duck species. These elegant birds are fast and agile, providing a technical challenge for any waterfowl hunting trip.
Ringed Teal
Pato de collar (Callonetta leucophrys)
Beautiful, small, and incredibly fast, darting in and out of the aquatic vegetation, demanding precision from duck hunting enthusiasts.
Brazilian Teal
Pato cutirí (Amazonetta brasiliensis)
Easily identified by its white-tipped wings and swift, direct flight pattern over marshes.
Silver Teal
Pato capuchino (Spatula versicolor)
Known for its striking blue bill pattern and its fast, agile maneuvers through tight gaps in the reeds.
Yellow-billed Teal
Pato barcino (Anas flavirostris)
A smaller bird often found in large groups, offering a fast, technical shot close to the water.
Fulvous Whistling-Duck
Sirirí colorado (Dendrocygna bicolor)
Large, vocal, and often found in extensive flocks. Their slower, more predictable flight pattern makes them ideal for introducing new hunters before tackling the faster teals.
Duck Hunting FAQ
📅 What is the best time for Ducks?
The season is strictly during the Argentine winter: May 15th to August 15th. June and July are typically the peak months for plumage and activity.
👢 Do I need to bring Waders?
No. This is a major advantage at AWS Lodge. We hunt from dry blinds or boats. You can hunt in comfortable boots.
Is there a bag limit?
Yes, unlike doves, ducks are regulated. The limit is generous (typically 15-20 ducks per hunter per morning) providing plenty of action for a morning shoot.
🔫 What shotguns do you rent?
We have a stock of Benelli and Beretta semi-autos in 20ga and 12ga. For ducks, 12ga is often preferred, but 20ga with magnum loads is very effective.
❄️ How cold does it get?
Mornings are crisp (30°F - 45°F / 0°C - 7°C). We recommend dressing in layers: thermal underwear, fleece, and a waterproof jacket.
🐕 Do you use dogs?
No, we use trained assistants :) to pick up birds in the water, ensuring an ethical hunt and recovering downed birds efficiently.
📍 How far is the drive to the blinds?
Very short. Unlike other lodges where you travel an hour, our blinds are usually 5 to 45 minutes from the lodge door.
🔄 Can I combine this with other species?
Absolutely. The standard program is Mixed Bag: Ducks in the morning, Perdiz or Doves in the afternoon. It's the ultimate Argentina experience.
