Q: for a first-time hunter is there any reason to pick a 20-gauge over a 12-gauge for doves or is it just personal preference
That's a great question for a first-time dove hunter, and it largely comes down to comfort and confidence, though there are some practical differences.
For a first-time hunter, a 20-gauge shotgun is often recommended for dove hunting for several reasons:
1. Reduced Recoil: This is the biggest factor. A 20-gauge has significantly less recoil than a 12-gauge. Less recoil means a more comfortable shooting experience, especially when shooting hundreds of shells a day, which is common with high-volume dove hunting in Argentina. This allows a new shooter to focus on technique, lead, and follow-through without anticipating a heavy kick.
2. Lighter Weight: 20-gauge shotguns are typically lighter, making them easier to carry in the field and quicker to swing, which can be advantageous when tracking fast-flying doves.
3. Maneuverability: The lighter weight and often smaller frame can make the 20-gauge feel less cumbersome, helping new hunters get on target faster.
A 12-gauge shotgun, while offering a larger payload of shot and potentially a denser pattern at longer ranges, also comes with more recoil and weight. While many experienced hunters prefer a 12-gauge, for someone new to the sport, managing the recoil over an extended period can lead to fatigue, flinching, and a less enjoyable experience.
For the vast majority of dove hunting scenarios, a 20-gauge provides ample power and range to effectively bring down doves, especially with the incredible volume we experience at AWS Lodge. Ultimately, a comfortable shooter is a more accurate shooter.
