Q: for doves vs ducks what specific chokes should we be looking at
That's an excellent question! Choosing the right choke is key to a successful hunt, and it varies significantly between doves and ducks due to their flight patterns and typical shooting ranges.
For dove hunting, which often involves fast-flying birds at closer to mid-ranges, we generally recommend more open chokes. An Improved Cylinder (IC) or Skeet (SK) choke is usually ideal. These provide a wider shot pattern, making it easier to connect with doves that can change direction quickly. Many hunters even use an IC in the first barrel and a Modified in the second for slightly longer shots.
For duck hunting, which typically involves larger birds at longer ranges, a tighter pattern is more effective to ensure clean kills. We usually suggest a Modified (MOD) or even a Full (F) choke. These chokes keep the shot pattern denser over greater distances, which is crucial for waterfowl.
