Q: what kind of clothing should we pack for june trip for winter hunting what's best for layering
For a June trip to AWS Lodge, which is our winter season, layering is definitely the best strategy! Our mornings can be quite crisp, often around 30-40°F (-1 to 4°C), but it usually warms up pleasantly during the day, reaching 50-60°F (10-15°C) with plenty of sunshine.
Here’s a breakdown of what we recommend for layering to ensure maximum comfort:
• Base Layer: Start with a good quality thermal base layer (top and bottom) made of merino wool or synthetic moisture-wicking material. This will keep you warm and dry.
• Mid-Layer: Add a fleece jacket or a warm sweater. This provides crucial insulation and can be easily removed if you get too warm.
• Outer Layer: A waterproof and windproof jacket is essential. It should be warm enough to handle the colder mornings but also breathable. A softshell or a good quality hunting jacket works perfectly.
• Pants: Insulated hunting pants or durable outdoor pants are recommended. You might want to wear a thermal base layer underneath for colder days.
• Headwear: A warm hat or beanie is a must, especially in the early mornings, as a lot of body heat is lost through the head.
• Gloves: Insulated, waterproof gloves are important to keep your hands warm and dry, especially during hunting.
• Footwear: Waterproof and comfortable hunting boots are crucial. Make sure they are well broken-in before your trip. Good quality wool socks are also highly recommended.
Remember, you can always shed layers as the day warms up, so having versatile clothing is key.
